A DEEPER DIVE
Inside the C-lite.
C-lite is an optical digital interconnect and an original Chord Company design. This version has a full-size Toslink plug at one end and a mini-jack optical plug at the other, in a 1m length. Chord made C-lite with both kinds of plug so that it can connect to many of the miniature DACs and digital audio players available today without a signal-degrading adaptor.
How it’s made
Chord uses a wide-bandwidth PMA optical cable and specifies C-lite to pass signals up to 96K, in keeping with the industry standard. The central conductor sits inside an internal jacket of soft PVC, which is covered by a hard-skin PVC outer jacket. Chord says this helps prevent crush damage while staying flexible enough for a tight bend radius without affecting the light carrier.
Where to use it
Use it between a device with a Toslink optical socket and one with a mini-jack optical socket: for example the optical output of a CD player such as the Shanling CR60 and the mini-jack optical input of a portable DAC or player. The mini-jack plug carries a digital signal as light: it is not an analogue headphone plug, so it needs a socket made for optical.
What Hi-Fi Choice said
Hi-Fi Choice reviewed C-lite in issue 485 (February 2022), testing the 1m Toslink to Toslink version. It found the cable “nicely made” and the quality of the Toslink plugs “very good”, and wrote that a full orchestral recording “demonstrates how well the C-lite transports everything .. including the quieter sections of the piece and the powerful drums that propel you through the music.” Its verdict: “a very nicely made and affordable optical cable that will suit most systems well.” It gave C-lite five stars and a Recommended badge.
