The iBasso AMP19 is an interchangeable amplifier card for the iBasso DX340 with two very different amplifiers in one compact module: a KORG Nutube 6P1 tube mode for a rich, relaxed sound, and iBasso’s fully discrete Super Class A mode for power and density. With the DX340 on 12V DC it delivers up to 2,150mW per channel into 32Ω, enough for demanding full-size headphones.

Nutube 6P1

The sixth-generation Nutube 6P1 triode, developed jointly by KORG and Noritake, brings the character of traditional tubes to a portable player: warm and natural, with engaging vocals, softer textures and an analogue feel. It is far smaller and more efficient than a conventional tube, about 30% of the size and 2% of the power, and lasts more than 30,000 hours.

Two output modes

  • Tube mode: the Nutube 6P1 works as the pre-amp tube, adding harmonic richness for a warmer, more relaxed and natural presentation, with softer textures to vocals and instruments.
  • Super Class A mode: 20 dual transistors form a fully discrete amplifier capable of up to 2A, for powerful energy and dynamics, fast transients, a fuller presentation and excellent vocal density and texture.

Tube and Super Class A modes of the iBasso AMP19

iBasso’s block diagram shows the Nutube on its own 22.5V anode supply and filament supply, followed by a JRC volume IC, a phase inverter and a headphone amplifier of op-amps and five transistor pairs per leg; in Super Class A mode the signal goes straight to the headphone amplifier.

2,150mW with 12V DC-IN

With iBasso’s 12V DC-IN external power, the headphone amplifier’s supply rises from ±6.5V to ±12V, and the AMP19 delivers up to 2,150mW + 2,150mW into 32Ω, giving the portable DX340 far more drive for demanding headphones.

Careful engineering

In Tube mode, a JRC hardware volume control adjusts the level in 100 fine analogue steps rather than by digital attenuation, so the DAC signal stays intact, noise stays low at low volume and detail and layering are kept, whether you use sensitive IEMs or high-impedance headphones. To keep tube microphonics down, PORON material suspends the Nutube in the chassis to absorb shock and vibration. Before shipping, every card is tested on an Audio Precision APx555 analyser, and iBasso engineers calibrate and match the Nutube circuit by hand with four multi-turn potentiometers, so each card sounds the same.
