The iBasso AMP16 is a hybrid tube and solid-state amplifier card for the iBasso DX340, built to bring out the best of the player’s 1-bit DSD DAC. Two Raytheon JAN6418 tubes give a sweet, warm sound in Tube mode, a Class AB circuit offers more resolution and dynamics, and with the DX340 running from its 12V input it delivers up to 2,000mW per channel balanced.
Dual JAN6418 tubes on a 22.5V anode supply
The two Raytheon JAN6418 directly heated tubes are known for their small size, low power use and very stable operation. Where most portable tube designs run them from 9V or 12V, the AMP16 gives them a dedicated 22.5V anode supply for more headroom, so they work at their best, with a warm, relaxed and velvety “tube flavour”.
Tube or Class AB
Switch between the two output modes at any time: Tube mode is sweet and warm, while Class AB gives more resolution and an excellent dynamic range. Around the tubes sit four Texas Instruments high-performance dual op-amps and four BUF634A buffers, with carefully chosen capacitors, in a compact card.
2,000mW per channel with 12V DC-IN
Building on the AMP15, the AMP16 supports the DX340’s 12V DC input (power supply sold separately). On it, each channel delivers 2,000mW into 32Ω from the 4.4mm balanced output, enough for hard-to-drive dynamic and planar headphones and even 300Ω full-size models, while still suiting in-ear monitors. On battery it gives 1,000mW per channel.
Taming tube noise
The 100-step JRC hardware volume control adjusts the volume and also reduces the tubes’ potential noise, for a quieter background. iBasso matches every pair of JAN6418s by hand on an Audio Precision APx555 analyser for consistent SINAD, which limits production to at most 50 pairs a day, and hangs the tubes in PORON material to absorb shock and reduce microphonics.

Good to know
- Like any tube design, the AMP16 can show slight microphonics in Tube mode: tapping the case while music is paused can make a ringing sound, and a nearby phone may cause occasional interference. iBasso says neither is noticeable while music plays, and neither happens in Class AB mode.
