The HiFiMAN Shangri-La Sr is an electrostatic headphone system: open-back electrostatic headphones and the matching valve amplifier made to drive them. Four custom 300B output valves drive the headphones directly, and HiFiMAN quotes a frequency response of 7Hz to 120kHz for the system.
The headphones
The Nanotech electrostatic driver has a nano-particle-coated diaphragm less than 0.001mm thick, for a very fast response with almost no distortion. Acoustically transparent mesh grilles and nanometre-thick dust covers protect the diaphragms without colouring the sound. The aluminium alloy frame, padded ear cups and hybrid headband keep them comfortable for long sessions, and the attached 2m cable ends in a 5-pin electrostatic connector.
The amplifier
Four 6SN7 valves and four HiFiMAN-made 300B valves sit on top of an aviation-grade aluminium chassis with a tempered glass panel. The 300Bs drive the headphones directly, with no capacitors or transformers in between. Volume is set by a relay-based 24-step attenuator built from 23 discrete resistors. A rear switch selects the balanced XLR or RCA input, and two 5-pin outputs let two people listen at once.
