The Cayin N6iii R202 is the N6iii Android music player fitted with the R202 audio motherboard, which has two fully discrete DACs: an R-2R resistor ladder and a 1-bit resistor network. The board can be swapped in seconds, without tools, for Cayin’s other N6iii motherboards.
The R202 motherboard
The R-2R DAC (192 × 0.1% thin-film resistors) decodes PCM natively up to 384kHz, and the 1-bit DAC (128 resistors) decodes DSD natively up to DSD256. Both are fully balanced, with a quad-channel fully balanced headphone amplifier built on INA1620 op-amps, a separate NJW1195 volume circuit with 256 steps of 0.5dB, 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs and dual femtosecond clocks. Three modes choose between the DACs. Auto uses R-2R for PCM and 1-bit for DSD. R-2R mode gives a rich, smooth, relaxed sound with a spacious stage. 1-bit mode brings out delicate treble detail with precise imaging.
Swappable boards
The quick-release latch is press, pull, push, click: no screws. Each motherboard is a complete audio section, so a new board changes the sound without changing the player. Second-generation boards do not fit the older N6ii.
The player
Android 12 runs on a Snapdragon 665 with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and microSD up to 2TB, with Google Play and Android’s sample rate conversion bypassed. The 5-inch 1080p screen fills the front of a 6063 aluminium body, with a brass volume knob and buttons in gold PVD; the knob lights up in a colour for each sample rate. A looped antenna under the top panel improves Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 supports LDAC, and the 9,000mAh battery charges with PD 2.0 (20–80% in about 2 hours).
