The Cayin Jazz 80 is a hand-built tube integrated amplifier with Bluetooth: 2 × 40W from four KT88s in ultra-linear mode (or EL34s, if you choose that version), with LDAC wireless streaming from your phone, tablet, laptop or TV. It is made to Cayin’s highest standards in a deep, glossy case with a headphone output and VU meters, a classic tube amplifier for a modern home.
Eight tubes, two modes
Four matched KT88 (or EL34) output tubes at the back provide the power. In front of them, two 12AX7s amplify the voltage of the incoming signal and two 12AU7s work as phase splitters and drivers for the output tubes, in a Class AB circuit with a rich, organic sound. A small toggle switch in front of the 12AX7s chooses Ultralinear (2 × 40W, dynamic and powerful) or Triode (2 × 20W, softer and more detailed). Cayin gave the Jazz 80 an elaborate power supply, including a filter choke.
Bias you can check yourself
Each output tube has its own bias trim potentiometer. Three toggle switches next to the mode switch let you check it: the centre switch turns the left VU meter into a bias meter, and the A1/A2 and A3/A4 switches select the tubes of the left and right channels, so every tube can be set correctly and the channels balanced.
Bluetooth with LDAC
Select the Bluetooth input and the blue LED flashes; the Jazz 80 appears as “Cayin HD BT”, and one tap connects your player. A Qualcomm QCC5125 Bluetooth 5.0 module receives LDAC (up to 990kbps, from Android 8.0 phones), UAT, aptX HD, aptX, aptX Low Latency, AAC and SBC, with an ESS ES9018K2M SABRE DAC, over a range of up to 10m.
Simple to use
Switch on with the small switch on the left side panel; the VU meters light up, and the LED in the volume control blinks while the soft start warms the tubes, then stays on when it is ready. Choose inputs with the rotary selector or the aluminium remote, which also sets the volume. A colour-matched, slotted cage protects the tubes from knocks while letting them breathe, and the amplifier stands on four shock-absorbing feet. The 6.35mm headphone output suits headphones from 16Ω to 300Ω.
