The ONIX Zenith XST20 is a top-loading SACD and CD transport for a separate DAC, the first model in ONIX’s high-end Zenith line. It plays SACDs in true DSD, either as native DSD64 over I2S or as DoP over coaxial, optical, AES and BNC, and its FPGA-assisted I2S with ten pinout modes means it works with almost any I2S DAC.
True DSD from SACD
Many transports can’t send the DSD layer of an SACD to an external DAC. The XST20 can, to any DSD-capable DAC. It supports single- and multi-layer SACDs with layer switching, standard CDs and MQA-CDs (ONIX quotes 4x expansion), all with smooth track transitions.
I2S that works
I2S has no fixed standard for its pin layout, which has caused compatibility problems between transports and DACs. The XST20’s FPGA hardware can switch between ten I2S pinout modes to suit virtually any I2S DAC, alongside USB, AES, BNC, coaxial and optical outputs, so it is a good match for high-end DACs.
Built for one job
The XST20 focuses entirely on the best possible playback of SACDs and CDs. There is no streaming, wireless or app, just the pure lossless quality of the disc. A top-loading HD870 drive with a traditional disc clamp, a built-in 45.1584MHz clock for precise data processing, and an ultra-clean power supply with a Talema 25VA toroidal iron-core transformer sit in a sturdy chassis CNC-machined from aluminium in the classic ONIX style, with gold details. A 3.4-inch touch screen gives direct access to the settings, and ONIX’s remote control is included.

Good to know
- A transport has no DAC or analogue output. You need a separate DAC, and for SACD in DSD it must accept DSD.
- The USB output does not carry SACD.
- The power supply is region-locked (110V or 220V), so it can’t be switched for use abroad.
