Class A push-pull, for 4Ω or 8Ω bookshelf and selected floorstanding speakers.
Glowing valves under a protective cover, backlit VU meters, four RCA inputs and a headphone output.
The FiiO EA13 is a full-size, pure valve stereo amplifier that took FiiO three years to develop. Two Sylvania NOS PCF80 preamp valves and four JJ Electronic EL34 power valves run in Class A push-pull, through a custom sand-filled output transformer, to deliver 28W per channel into 4Ω or 8Ω speakers. Backlit mechanical VU meters, four RCA inputs, a 6.35mm headphone output, a 12V trigger input and RGB-lit knobs complete a design that, in FiiO’s words, reimagines the valve amplifier: a classic, made new. Choose black or silver.

Voltage amplification in the preamp stage is handled by two NOS (new old stock) PCF80 valves from Sylvania, one of America’s premier valve makers, for a refined, transparent sound with an open, natural soundstage. Power amplification comes from four EL34s by JJ Electronic of the Czech Republic, classic European power valves with a warm, full-bodied, unmistakably valve character.
As the valves warm up, their glow rises, the lighting flows and the needles of the VU meters begin to dance. Because of production batches, storage and natural oxidation, the printing on valves can look slightly blurred, faded or partly worn, and dark or mirror-like getter marks inside the glass are normal; neither affects performance or sound.

The circuit draws on the classic designs of famous valve amplifiers from the golden era of the 1950s, combining pentode mode with pure Class A operation to keep distortion low, for a sound FiiO describes as delicate, dense, silky and beautifully transparent. It delivers 28W per channel (18W at under 1% distortion), enough for most bookshelf speakers and selected floorstanders, with refinement and authority, from the subtle nuances of a performer’s breath to the expansive soundstage of a concert hall.

FiiO spared no expense on a custom output transformer with EI silicon-steel laminations. It is filled with epoxy resin and fine sand, then sealed in a robust enclosure, which suppresses transformer vibration, gives excellent electromagnetic shielding and moisture protection, and improves stability and longevity. The result is a blacker background, tighter, weightier bass and more refined treble, so both the finest details and the biggest dynamics come through. FiiO describes it as high-bandwidth and low-noise.

Large-capacity Japanese NCC filter capacitors give a pure, clean power supply that lets the natural richness of the valves come through, and high-quality axial metal-film coupling capacitors offer low loss, low distortion and excellent stability. The valve circuit runs from a DC supply for better sound, and the digital control section (an ESP32-S3 controller) has a power supply separate from the analogue circuits, to avoid crosstalk and interference. Volume is set by a high-quality analogue potentiometer, for smooth, precise and natural control.

The front panel is CNC-machined from aviation-grade aluminium, thickened and sandblasted for a refined feel and to suppress resonance. A unibody chassis looks clean and commanding, is solidly built and shields well against interference. The valves sit recessed in the chassis under an integrated protective cover, for a sleek, modern look without compromising safety, and side grilles and vibration-damping feet complete the design.

Two true mechanical VU meters, one per channel, have a warm, retro LED backlight run by a dedicated control chip. When the music starts the needles dance in time with it, so the music becomes something you can see as well as hear. A deviation of up to about ±1mm (±1°) between the left and right needles at rest is within FiiO’s factory tolerance and normal.

The left knob, a high-quality encoder with a clear, positive feel, selects among the four inputs; press it to change its RGB light effect, double-press to turn the lights off, and hold it to switch on or into standby. The right knob sets the volume. A precision signal-detection circuit puts the EA13 into low-power standby after 30 minutes without a signal, cutting both the high-voltage and filament supplies to the valves; this saves energy and, by avoiding “cathode poisoning”, extends valve life. To turn auto-standby off, double-press the left knob while it glows red in standby (the light flashes twice); repeat to turn it back on.

Four RCA analogue inputs take streamers, turntables with a phono stage, CD players, DACs and more. Gold-plated speaker binding posts provide separate 4Ω and 8Ω taps for speakers of different impedances (use the 8Ω tap for 6Ω speakers), and a 12V trigger input switches the EA13 on and off with other trigger-equipped components, such as FiiO’s S15 streamer. The front 6.35mm headphone output suits full-size headphones from 16Ω to 300Ω.

FiiO recommends speakers with a sensitivity of at least 86dB for near-field listening, or 89dB for listening further away. Like any valve amplifier the EA13 has some background noise, so FiiO advises full-size headphones rather than small, highly sensitive earphones, and keeping Wi-Fi routers and phones away from the valves, which pick up wireless interference. FiiO recommends using speakers or headphones, not both at once. With FiiO’s IMP XLR-4 impedance adapter (350Ω) and banana-plug cables, you can also drive 4.4mm and XLR headphones.
