The Shanling SCD1.3 is a high-definition SACD and CD player that is also a complete digital source: it streams over Wi-Fi, plays from USB drives, receives Bluetooth and works as a USB DAC. Its flagship AKM AK4499EX DAC with AK4191 modulator supports PCM up to 768kHz/32-bit and DSD512, and it has balanced XLR, RCA and 6.35mm headphone outputs, plus an I²S output for an external DAC.
Full support for SACD and CD
A MediaTek MT1389EE system with a Sanyo HD870 laser and servo, in a tray-loading drive, reads high-resolution SACDs quickly and reliably with strong error correction. It plays standard CDs, SACDs and hybrid SACDs (multichannel SACDs with limited functionality), and a dedicated button switches quickly between the SACD and CD layers of a hybrid disc.
FPGA-enhanced I²S output
The SCD1.3 was the first Shanling model with a new I²S system: a dedicated FPGA circuit makes the I²S output adjustable, with ten of the most common I²S-over-HDMI pin-out standards, so it works with far more DACs on the market. Coaxial and optical outputs are there too; over these, SACD playback is converted to PCM 88.2kHz.
Flagship AKM DAC
Shanling based the SCD1.3’s tuning on its acclaimed M9 Plus player, with the same flagship AK4499EX and AK4191 at its centre: highly detailed, with a vast and precise soundstage, yet with a little warmth and smoothness for the classic Shanling sound.
- MUSES8920 pre-out: with precise volume control and MUSES8920 op-amps as the pre-amplifier, the SCD1.3 can drive power amplifiers or active speakers directly, for a simple, high-quality two-channel speaker system.
- TPA6120 headphone amplifier: a dedicated amplifier optimised for full-size audiophile headphones, powerful and controlled yet smooth, with up to 1.1W into 32Ω.
- KDS oscillators and fourth-generation FPGA: upgraded Japanese KDS 90MHz and 98MHz active oscillators with Shanling’s improved algorithm, for accuracy and lower jitter when decoding all audio.
- Premium capacitors: chosen for tuning from Nichicon (including Silmic II), Panasonic, Wurth Elektronik and others, drawing on Shanling’s 36 years in hi-fi.
MTouch, optimised for a CD player
The latest generation of Shanling’s MTouch system runs on an Ingenic X2000 platform, with a 5.1-inch touch screen. It is faster and more responsive than before, with a simpler interface adjusted for the role of a CD player. You can also use the physical buttons and volume wheel, the remote control, or Shanling’s Eddict Player app for Android and iOS, which controls SACD playback and lets you browse the hi-res files on a connected USB drive.
A multifunctional source
Inputs: SACD/CD, USB drive, USB DAC (XMOS XU316), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and coaxial and optical digital. Outputs: I²S, coaxial and optical digital, and balanced XLR, RCA and 6.35mm analogue. Bluetooth 5.0 receives LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, AAC and SBC from phones and tablets, and Wi-Fi supports DLNA, AirPlay and NAS streaming.
Simple, elegant design
The SCD1.3 was the first model in Shanling’s new design style, simpler and more elegant so it fits easily into a wide range of homes, in silver or black.
