MEET THE EC
A portable CD player with a 24-bit R2R DAC, switchable JAN6418 tube or transistor output and up to 1,300mW balanced.
192 precision resistors, with OS and NOS modes.
Two JAN6418 tubes, or a faster, more dynamic transistor stage.
Up to 1,300mW from 4.4mm, plus aptX Adaptive Bluetooth.
The Shanling EC Zero T MAX is a high-end portable CD player with Shanling’s own 24-bit R2R DAC, a pair of JAN6418 tubes you can switch in, and a new amplifier giving up to 1,300mW into 32Ω, even from the battery. It brings the hands-on pleasure of playing real CDs together with a modern hi-res system: it also works as a USB DAC, rips CDs to a USB drive and streams to Bluetooth headphones.

The MAX edition builds on the acclaimed sound of the EC Zero T, adding Shanling’s latest R2R expertise and, following feedback from owners, a stronger headphone amplifier. The new circuit, designed around the AD8397, gives much more power without needing external power, and a much lower output impedance, so it is a better match for both demanding full-size headphones and the most advanced in-ear monitors, while keeping the rich, warm sound of the EC Zero T.

The MAX uses the same R2R module as the original EC Zero T: a 24-bit design built from 192 high-precision 0.1% resistors. An FPGA converts every signal to PCM and feeds four 24-bit R2R ladders, one for each half of the balanced left and right channels. Shanling has added DAC circuit and power-supply refinements developed for its SCD3.3 and SCD1.3R players, for a wider, deeper soundstage and more transparency in the mids and treble. OS (oversampling) mode sounds cleaner and more precise; NOS (non-oversampling) mode is smoother and more natural.

The 4.4mm balanced output gives up to 1,300mW into 32Ω and the 3.5mm output up to 361mW, running straight from the battery, with no need for an external power supply.

Two low-voltage, power-efficient JAN6418 tubes sit in a custom anti-shock structure that eliminates microphonics and vibration, recreating the classic pairing of CD player and tubes from Shanling’s early days. Tube mode is thicker and warmer, with a beautifully flowing sound; transistor mode gives dynamic, hard-hitting energy.

The main body is CNC-machined from one piece of aluminium for durability and rigidity, in a smooth titanium-grey finish with a new pattern on the CD cover and a few hidden details. The tempered-glass lid is tough enough for travel and gives a clear view of the spinning disc, and Shanling’s own interface starts quickly and keeps only the key controls.

An active magnetic clamp continuously adjusts its position and pressure on the disc, improving stability and reducing mechanical noise and vibration from the drive; every unit goes through long testing during production. The compact custom CD drive gives desktop-level performance in all conditions, with gapless playback for all CDs.

The 5,500mAh battery gives up to about 8 hours from the 3.5mm output, 7.5 hours from 4.4mm, or 20 hours as a Bluetooth transmitter. At home, connect a USB-C power adapter (5V/2A) and the MAX switches to a dedicated external power mode that bypasses the battery, while still trickle-charging it so it is always ready to take out.

Play CDs or use it as a USB DAC (PCM up to 768kHz/32-bit and DSD512). Outputs include 3.5mm and 4.4mm headphone sockets, 3.5mm and 4.4mm line outputs, and a 3.5mm S/PDIF socket for coaxial or optical digital, plus Bluetooth 5.3 transmission to headphones or speakers with aptX Adaptive, aptX and SBC.
