The ONIX Mystic XP1 is a high-end portable DAC and headphone amplifier, designed by ONIX and made by Shanling. It pairs two AKM AK4499EX DACs and an AK4191 modulator with a TPA6120A2 amplifier, plays music from its own microSD slot, and gives up to 2,360mW into 32Ω when you connect the external power supply, so it goes from small earphones on the move to demanding headphones at a desk.

ONIX Mystic XP1 features at a glance

Exquisite construction

The unibody is carefully CNC-machined from high-grade aluminium in the classic ribbed style of ONIX’s hi-end devices, strong and beautiful, with a gold-plated volume wheel and a vintage-style dot-matrix OLED display.

Audiophile-grade circuit

Two AK4499EX DACs and the AK4191 delta-sigma modulator, AKM’s flagship combination, run in a fully balanced configuration for formidable resolution and natural timbre. They are followed by ONIX’s in-house “Brighton” I/V conversion stage, taken from the Miracle streamer, which helps the DACs and amplifiers give their best. A symmetrical TPA6120A2 amplifier is optimised for demanding full-size headphones and tuned for a rich, smooth sound, and a MUSES8920 drives the balanced line output, which can also work as a pre-amp.

Rich connectivity and local playback

Unlike most portable DACs, the XP1 doesn’t have to rely on a phone or computer: it plays lossless files from a microSD card of up to 2TB, controlled with Shanling’s Eddict Player app on Android or iOS. It also takes USB from a hi-fi grade XMOS XU316 interface (PCM up to 768kHz/32-bit and DSD512), a combined coaxial and optical S/PDIF input (up to 192kHz/24-bit), Bluetooth 5.0 as a Bluetooth DAC with LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, AAC and SBC, and a 3.5mm analogue input to use it as a pure amplifier.

Outputs and battery

3.5mm, 6.35mm and 4.4mm headphone outputs suit every kind of headphone, and the 4.4mm balanced line or pre-amp output makes it easy to fit the XP1 into a bigger hi-fi system. Earphone and headphone modes each have three gain levels. The 7,000mAh battery feeds the high-end circuit for up to 10 hours of continuous playback, and charges through its own USB-C port.

M-Power for maximum power

On battery the XP1 gives 750mW into 32Ω balanced. Connect an external 12V DC supply to switch to M-Power and it delivers 2,360mW into 32Ω or 480mW into 300Ω balanced (812mW and 120mW single-ended), enough for even the most demanding headphones on a desk.

Good to know

  • Output impedance is 6.6Ω (4.4mm) and 4.7Ω (single-ended), higher than most portable amplifiers. This is worth knowing if you use low-impedance multi-driver IEMs.
  • There is no touch screen: microSD playback is controlled from the Eddict Player app.
  • In the box: XP1, 3.5mm to coaxial cable, USB-C to USB-C and USB-A to USB-C cables, and DC power cable.
