About Wired Headphones
Wired headphones are where the best sound per pound lives. The FiiO FT1 closed-back, with its walnut cups and 60mm driver, and the HiFiMan HE400se planar have reset expectations for what £130 to £140 buys. Above them sit the FiiO FT1 Pro and FT5 planars, HiFiMan's Sundara, Ananda Nano and Arya, the FiiO FT7 flagship, and reference designs from Audio-Technica, Grado and Dan Clark Audio.
Open or closed?
- Open-back headphones (most planars, the FT1 Pro, FT7, Sundara and Arya) sound spacious and natural, and let sound in and out. Best at home.
- Closed-back headphones (FT1, FT13, HE-R9) keep your music to yourself and block the room. Better for shared spaces and travel.
Planar or dynamic?
Planar magnetic drivers (HiFiMan, FiiO FT5 and FT1 Pro) give speed and detail and usually want a desktop amplifier; dynamic drivers (FT1, JT3) are easier to drive from a dongle DAC or a player. Each product page shows impedance and sensitivity so you can match them to your source. Prefer Bluetooth? See wireless headphones.
