The Audio-Technica ATH-AWKT is a closed-back, over-ear wooden headphone with housings of Kokutan, a rare Japanese hardwood also known as striped ebony. Long used for woodwind instruments and pianos, the dense wood suppresses unwanted resonance for clear, natural sound, and exclusive 53mm drivers with German Permendur magnetic circuits deliver exceptionally accurate audio with a wide sound field, up to 45kHz. Two detachable 3m cables are included, one with a 6.3mm plug and one with a 4-pin XLR balanced connector, and each pair is hand-assembled in Tokyo.
Kokutan, striped ebony
Audio-Technica’s wooden headphones have been delivering natural, acoustic sound with rich overtones for more than 20 years. Since the first model, the ATH-W10VTG in 1996, Audio-Technica has worked with a variety of woods, for their natural beauty and tonal qualities and a clear, warm, wide-open sound. The AWKT uses Kokutan, renowned for its excellent acoustic properties, with handsome black and brown stripes. A half-gloss finish, applied by hand, brings out the natural beauty of the grain, a beauty that only deepens with age.
53mm Permendur drivers and D.A.D.S.
The exclusive 53mm drivers use highly efficient German Permendur magnetic circuits for powerful, accurate audio with a wide sound field. Each driver’s lightweight, durable titanium flange lets the diaphragm react to the signal more accurately, and 6N-OFC (high-purity, oxygen-free copper) voice coils give ideal signal transfer. Audio-Technica’s Double Air Damping System (D.A.D.S.) divides each housing into two separate acoustic chambers, for deep, smooth and accurate bass.
High-resolution sound
Hi-Res Audio, generally considered to be 96kHz/24-bit or better, needs headphones that reach at least 40kHz. The AWKT reaches 45kHz. Audio-Technica has made audiophile headphones since 1972.
Fit and cables
The arms that hold the housings are made from a lightweight, highly rigid magnesium alloy, angled for the best possible fit and an excellent earcup seal. The stitched, ergonomic earpads and headband are smooth, high-durability sheepskin, for long-lasting comfort.
A2DC (Audio Designed Detachable Coaxial) jacks on the earcups give a secure connection to the two included 3m detachable cables, both with a braided fabric sheath. One has a 6.3mm (1/4") gold-plated stereo plug for standard audio equipment. The other, with 6N-OFC conductors, has a 4-pin XLRM balanced connector for the latest high-fidelity equipment, for better channel separation.
