The HiFiMAN EF600 is a desktop R2R DAC and headphone amplifier in an elegant, Bauhaus-style tower case, a Red Dot award winner in 2024. Two of HiFiMAN’s own HYMALAYA Pro R2R DACs feed a fully balanced, high-current amplifier with 5.12W per channel, and a full set of connections, USB, coaxial, Bluetooth and analogue XLR and RCA inputs, plus XLR and RCA outputs, lets it work as a DAC, a pure headphone amplifier or a pre-amp.

Dual HYMALAYA Pro R2R DACs

HiFiMAN’s HYMALAYA R2R DAC won a 2022 VGP Gold Technology Award in Japan, and HiFiMAN says the HYMALAYA Pro has an edge over even the venerable PCM1704K: lower distortion, lower noise and extremely low power consumption. With two of them, the EF600 measures 118dB signal-to-noise ratio, 0.0014% minimum distortion, 0.28% at −60dB and 131dB channel separation, better on every count than HiFiMAN’s HM1000 Gold with four PCM1704Ks.

5.12W per channel, fully balanced

Each channel runs balanced from its DAC through a switch (which also takes the XLR input), buffer, low-pass filter and a four-channel volume attenuator to a dual-channel balanced output, giving a mighty 5.12W per channel. Front indicators show high or low gain, each with NOS or OS, and the input in use.

Tower design for low noise

The tower keeps the centre of gravity low and lets heat rise away by convection. A linear power supply with an oxygen-free copper toroidal transformer sits at the base, the high-current amplifier circuit above it, and the HYMALAYA Pro DAC module at the top, under the vents, an optimised thermal layout for a significantly lower noise floor.

Hi-res Bluetooth

Bluetooth with LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, AAC and SBC lets you stream from a phone or tablet. For the best connection, HiFiMAN advises keeping metal objects away from the back of the EF600.

Every connection

At the front are a 4-pin XLR balanced and a 6.35mm headphone output, with input selectors and the volume control. At the back are USB-B and USB-C, coaxial, XLR balanced and RCA analogue inputs, RCA and XLR outputs for a power amplifier or active speakers, and the Bluetooth antenna. The analogue inputs let the EF600 work as a headphone amplifier for a CD or SACD player.
