The Audio-Technica ATH-AWAS is a closed-back, over-ear wooden headphone with housings of rare Asada Zakura, Japanese cherry. The wood suppresses unwanted resonance inside the earcups for clear, natural sound, and exclusive 53mm drivers with DLC-coated diaphragms deliver exceptional full-range audio up to 42kHz. Two detachable 3m cables are included, one with a 6.3mm plug and one with a 4-pin XLR balanced connector, and like all Audio-Technica wooden headphones the AWAS is hand-assembled in Tokyo.
Asada Zakura
Asada Zakura is renowned for its use in high-end audio speakers, thanks to its fine acoustic characteristics and its durability. In the AWAS its striking red wood suppresses unwanted resonance inside the earcups, and a half-gloss finish, applied by hand, accentuates its gentle grain and warm beauty.
Audio-Technica’s wooden headphones have been delivering natural, acoustic sound with rich overtones for more than 20 years, since the first model, the ATH-W10VTG, in 1996.
53mm drivers and D.A.D.S.
The exclusive 53mm drivers combine a powerful magnetic circuit with an integrated pure-iron yoke, which improves transient response for accurate reproduction. A DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating on each diaphragm improves the high frequencies, and 6N-OFC (high-purity, oxygen-free copper) voice coils give ideal signal transfer. Audio-Technica’s Double Air Damping System (D.A.D.S.) divides each housing into two separate acoustic chambers, for deep, smooth and accurate bass.
High-resolution sound
Hi-Res Audio, generally considered to be 96kHz/24-bit or better, needs headphones that reach at least 40kHz. The AWAS reaches 42kHz. Audio-Technica has made audiophile headphones since 1972.
Fit and cables
The arms that hold the housings are made from a lightweight, highly rigid magnesium alloy, angled for the best possible fit and an excellent earcup seal. The earpads and headband are smooth synthetic leather, for long-lasting comfort.
A2DC (Audio Designed Detachable Coaxial) jacks on the earcups give a secure connection to the two included 3m detachable cables. One has a 6.3mm (1/4") gold-plated stereo plug for standard audio equipment. The other has a 4-pin XLRM balanced connector for the latest high-fidelity equipment, for better channel separation.
