The Shanling CD80 is a compact, back-to-basics CD player. CD players are Shanling’s roots, going back to its start in Shenzhen in 1988, and the CD80 brings the classic design up to date: an ESS ES9219MQ DAC, a Philips drive with a Sanyo HD860 laser, USB drive playback up to 384kHz/32-bit and DSD256, MQA-CD support and a Bluetooth 5.0 input with LDAC, with RCA, optical and headphone outputs.
Designed like a 1990s CD player
Shanling designed the CD80 with the classic CD players of the 1990s in mind and kept it simple. There is no touch screen, just mechanical buttons and a digital tube display that shows the track and playback status. Even the drive is an old-school slot loader, with proper damping for vibration-free playback.
At 250 × 205 × 52mm and about 2.4kg, it is small and sleek enough for a bedside table, a cramped office desk or a hi-fi rack that already has one component too many.
Modern technology inside
- Philips CD drive and Sanyo HD860 laser for reliable CD reading, run by an Ingenic X1000 system platform.
- ESS ES9219MQ DAC, a new-generation Sabre chip, with an LTA8092 amplifier and a Ricore RT6863 headphone amplifier.
- MQA-CD playback as well as standard CDs.
- USB drive playback from the front port: DSD, DXD, APE, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, DTS, MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG, M4A, AC3, OPUS, TAK and CUE files, up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256.
Bluetooth and connections
The Bluetooth 5.0 input receives LDAC and AAC, for the best sound from Android phones and iPhones alike. On the back, the RCA output works at a fixed line level for an amplifier, or as a pre-out with volume control for powered speakers or a power amplifier; an optical S/PDIF output feeds an external DAC, and the 3.5mm headphone output gives 130mW into 32Ω. You can control it from the buttons, the supplied remote or Shanling’s Eddict Player app.
