I was looking to buy a new MP3 player with a high sound quality and good sized memory, after reading the on-line reviews I decided on the Astell 'KANN' along with the MKII Ripper (reviewed separately), I had a few teething problems at first, mainly b...Read moreecause I am not the most IT knowledgeable person you will meet but also because the instructions you get in the packaging are VERY VERY basic, I would recommend that any one buying this player please download the full instruction manual from the Astell & Kern website and fully read before use, you will therefore not encounter the problems I had.

Plus points are: Extremely well made and good looking, Ability to increase memory size with 2 x 256GB memory cards, Amazing sound quality (with decent head/earphones), Good battery life, Internal DAC, Standard and balanced line out and phone ports, Great volume range for the hard of hearing, No need to hook up to computer if you have the Astell ripper, full wifi so all album artwork and details automatically added.
Minus points are: Not lightweight, Runs hot, Not cheap (but worth the outlay).

Some useful tips: (learn from my mistakes) Get the recommended memory cards, Use decent head/earphones, READ the instruction manual, If using the Astell ripper be aware it only rips to the Internal storage, when this is full you have to copy the downloaded files from the internal storage to the additional memory cards and delete the internal storage to start again, the ripper cannot download straight onto the memory cards, you don't have to attach to a PC to do this, it is all done via the Kann itself and is quite easy after the first couple of goes.

All in all I am very pleased with the Kann and the sound is AMAZING, I think it will be even better when I save enough money to buy a pair of balanced phones. Recommended? Definitely.

I bought this player to replace my QP1R which sounded great but I never liked or got to grips with the 'wheel' you need to use for most navigation on the device. I don't use audiophile language but the Kann is perfect for me for 4 reasons:

1 sound...Read more quality is great- even with my MP3's but especially with hi-res tracks
2 battery life is very good
3 storage is massive / potentially more than .8 tb
4. The UI is intuitive and easy to navigate

Having said that you must make sure you buy the right high capacity cards to achieve maximum file storage/ the Kingston 512gB SD card doesn't work with Kann but the Sandisk does - as does the Sandisk microSD card. Oddly the Kingston 256gb SD card is OK in my player.

I can't compare with anything else in A&K's product list apart from the AK120. I love the AK120's tiny footprint but it's not a patch on the Kann for sound quality.
