Astell & Kern AK70 MkII-

What can i say but, Wow. Its just simply stunning. Looks- its simple & elegant, and has a lovely quality feel, it has a nice weight to it, good button/ wheel access feel, its not too heavy and perfect size in my ...Read moreopinion. Ease of Use/ menu system- simple straight forward, Logical & again Elegant.
Sound- and of course this is the biggee. I've listened to quite a few different units. Some time ago i bought the Cowon M2 twin DAC after much deliberation, Listening & testing, and for a great price, testing units up to approx. £800 or so, and for the money i felt nothing beat that for the price. Even spending another £500-£600, i didnt think warranted the minute differences in sound quality or better menu systems. its served me exceptionally well and have loved every hour of involving listeneing.

That was until now.. I heard the AK70 MkII, and there was a big step up in sound depth, refinement, forward headroom, feel, openness, engagement with the music, which id not heard since the first time i ever heard Dark Side of the Moon on a Linn Sondek LP12, through Quad Monoblocks to Heybrook HB2's in 1988. it was that kind of feeling. i was romanticised by the experience, Wowed. again i listened to several other makes & models, but just didn't feel it like i did with the AK70 Mk II, i just didnt feel as immersed as this gorgeous new machine by Astell & Kern. they really have made a truly stunning machine for a great price. i got this in a deal for £500 and not regretted it at all.

i Test with in ear phones:- Sennheiser ie800's, & Grado GR10's and over ear headphones:- AKG 702's, Grado sr325e 7 SR1000's, Sennheiser HD800s's & Active Mitchell & Johnson Electrostatic Hybrid GL2SE's. I also use an Oppo portable headphone amp sometimes & a QUAD PA-One Headphone Valve Amp with ex-Soyuz, British Military& exNasa Valves.

In short well worth the money, a bargain. AK have excelled themselves. It is a Gem!! Love it
Cheers, hope this helps.

Ultimately, the AK70 mkII offers a worthwhile sonic improvement over the original AK70. Despite the AK70 remaining the entry-level player in Astell & Kernís music player line-up, the choice between the two is clear. Unless you have an unusually st...Read morerong fondness for that mint finish.
