chord-c-lite-minijack-to-minijack-cable
Chord C-lite Mini-jack to Mini-jack Cable

C-lite is an optical digital interconnect and an original Chord Company design. This version has a mini-jack optical plug at each end and comes in two short lengths, 15cm and 30cm, which Chord makes for portable equipment. Chord’s point is simple: with the right plug on the cable, it can connect to many of the miniature DACs and digital audio players available today without a signal-degrading adaptor.

How it’s made

Chord uses a wide-bandwidth PMA optical cable and specifies C-lite to pass signals up to 96K, in keeping with the industry standard. The central conductor sits inside an internal jacket of soft PVC, which is covered by a hard-skin PVC outer jacket. Chord says this helps prevent crush damage while staying flexible enough for a tight bend radius without affecting the light carrier.

Where to use it

Use it to link two devices that both have a mini-jack optical socket, for example a portable player’s optical output and the optical input of a portable DAC. The plugs carry a digital signal as light: they are not analogue headphone plugs, so they need an optical socket at both ends.

What Hi-Fi Choice said

Hi-Fi Choice reviewed C-lite in issue 485 (February 2022), testing the 1m Toslink to Toslink version. It found the cable “nicely made” and wrote that a full orchestral recording “demonstrates how well the C-lite transports everything .. including the quieter sections of the piece and the powerful drums that propel you through the music.” Its verdict: “a very nicely made and affordable optical cable that will suit most systems well.” It gave C-lite five stars and a Recommended badge.

Type

Optical digital interconnect

Plugs

Mini-jack optical at both ends

Optical cable

Wide-bandwidth PMA

Signals

Up to 96K (Chord)

Jacket

Soft PVC inner, hard-skin PVC outer

Lengths

15cm or 30cm

Good to know

Pick the length in the options above: 15cm or 30cm.

Need a full-size Toslink plug at one end?
