The new (and long-awaited) Samsung YP-P2 is quite simply a revelation. Razor thin with a huge 3.0" widescreen display, as well as a host of other features, this is the perfect all-round performance portable media player!
So, you’re looking for an MP3 player that can do it all? Play movies and music, tune into the radio, touch screen and Bluetooth? You’re looking for a player that’s a bit different, with superb sound quality and a super high res 3” Widescreen LCD display? Advanced MP3 Players are proud to introduce the Samsung YP-P2. It’s glossy piano black product casing is dominated almost entirely by a huge 3” touch sensitive screen which springs to life showcasing a 480 x 272 pixel LCD display. The format of the screen is ideal for playing 16:9 aspect ratio music videos and films – the aspect ratio of choice for a majority of movies. Even if the interface style doesn’t suit your taste, you can choose from up to 3 completely different interfaces – you’re sure to find one that you find intuitive.
The YP-P2 is all about quality; making sure that your music, movies and photos are served on a gold plate of audiovisual excellence. Your ears are treated to an audio feast with Samsung’s unique DNSE 2.0 sound technology, which ensures that your music files are reproduced the way the artist intended. You’ll hear cymbals, drums and beats you never thought existed in your favourite audio tracks, and the extensive sound personalisation options help you to customise your audio experience even further.
There are so many good quality portable media players on the market that a player has to offer something unique to stand out. One of the YP-P2’s claims to fame is its excellent built in Bluetooth support. As well as being able to stream audio to wireless Bluetooth headphones or speakers, the YP-P2 also allows two people to pair Bluetooth headphones simultaneously with the YP-P2, a handy feature if you’re travelling with your partner or your kids both want to watch the same movie.

So, the big question – how does the YP-P2 compare to the iPod Touch and iPhone? In terms of price – the YP-P2 is a good £40 - £50 cheaper for the equivalent 8GB iPod Touch. That’s 1 – 0 to Samsung. In terms of sound quality, this obviously comes down to personal taste - both players are acoustically excellent, but Samsung’s proprietary DNSE 2.0 sound technology narrowly sways the YP-P2 to a 2 – 0 lead. The YP-P2 doesn’t get everything its own way though – there’s nothing currently on the market to beat the Touch’s unique “Multi-touch” interface, and although the YP-P2 puts in a strong challenge with similar touch and drag technology, Apple have clawed one back: 2 – 1. In terms of features and functions, the iPod Touch has advantage of built in Wi-Fi web browsing, whereas the YP-P2 has Bluetooth support. Wi-Fi web browsing is undoubtedly a great feature, but you’ve just got to remember that free Wi-Fi access is a rarity in the UK at present, and you’ve got to ask yourself how often are you going to want to access the internet via a 3.5” screen at home, when you’ve got at least a 15” screen sitting in your bedroom or living room? Getting rid of headphone wires permanently is a genuinely useful bonus of the YP-P2, especially if you commute or take your player jogging. One each for that dual, making it 3 – 2. Let’s get down to some figures that can’t be disputed – battery life. The Touch’s 0.5” larger screen means a battery life of 22 hours for audio and 5 hours for video, this compares to the YP-P2s marathon 35 hours for audio and 5 hours for video. There’s only one winner for this particular specification, 4 – 2 to Samsung. Next up is codec support, the YP-P2 supports MP3, WMA, JPEG, WMV, MPEG4 whereas the Touch supports AAC, MP3, Audible, Apple Lossless, AIFF, H.264 video and WAV. A narrow win for the Touch due to it’s Audible audio book support, although the YP-P2’s video formats are more commonly available, this makes it 4 – 3. Physical dimensions are an interesting battle between the players, the YP-P2 is 100 x 52 x 9.9mm, weighing 79g whereas the Touch is taller, wider and heavier but slimmer (11 x 61 x 80mm, weighing 120g). The Touch’s larger dimensions are partly due to its 3.5” screen, but the lighter weight of the YP-P2 is definite bonus, although the Touch is marginally slimmer. Our mini comparison battle ends 5 – 4 to the Samsung YP-P2, it’s one of the most complete portable media players available and a stunning addition to Samsung's range of MP3 players.
With a 3” Widescreen 480 x 272 LCD Display, the Samsung YP-P2 has a screen built for video, bright and sharp and ideal for 16:9 Music videos and films. On top of that, the Samsung YP-P2 also offers the same clarity for your JPEGs. The touchscreen interactive display makes the P2 very easy to use, and a choice of 3 styles of interface puts the user in control of how they use their P2. Enjoy swift navigation at your fingertips, quite literally! Bluetooth 2.0 implemented allows 2 sets of headphones to be paired with the P2, with A2DP (advanced audio streaming) and AVRCP – remote control via Bluetooth. It can also be paired with your car stereo* and home HiFi system* (*depending on Bluetooth capability of the system) DNSE 2.0 for superior sound quality, so it can be reproduced the way it was intended through Sound personalization, User equalizer setting and Bass extension. ...and yet packs all of these features, in 2GB, 4GB and 8GB sizes.

T3 Magazine Review (Christmas 2007): "A fully-juiced unit gives 35 hours of music stomping or five hours of movie rolling. Measuring just under 10mm thin, sounds and vision are also sufficiently rocking. As your mum said before long car trips, you must P2."
CNET.com Review (Rating 7.7/10): "Samsung has produced a solid new player. It's stylish, easy to use and distinctly affordable. All in all, the YP-P2 is capable and affordable, but hindered by some annoying software restrictions. If you're looking for an affordable and great looking player, consider the P2..." reghardware.co.uk Review (Rating 85%): "The P2 has all the qualities that impressed us about Samsung's T10 but with a bigger screen and a flash touchscreen UI. But should really come in 4, 8 and 16GB flavours for the same price..." Click here for full review

Pocket-lint.com Review (Rating 9/10) Samsung has produced a really good offering here that provides plenty of features like Bluetooth, a radio and a screen that, although small, is still suitable for watching video, as well as a device that gives good rounded sound. With no issues about software compatibility (it's drag and drop), this is a great alternative to Apple's current iPod range. Click here for full review
