Oh, such mixed feelings. Full disclosure: I am coming to the Cowon Plenue D from an iTunes and iPod Classic environment. The good? This little unit is a beautiful piece of kit which has already got many admiring glances and it sounds fantastic. After...Read more playing around with the extensive EQ options, I have found a sweet spot that, paired with my AKG headphones, sounds amazing. I'm hearing new sounds and existing ones have more depth than they did before.
HOWEVER: the matrix (album art) browser does not work correctly and albums containing multiple discs are not played in the correct order. (Seems like the disc number field is ignored.) Both if these are undoubtedly related to how I have tagged my files (iTunes) and while the former doesn't bother me, the latter does. On top of this, FLAC and ALAC files do not play gaplessly, despite the manual stating otherwise. Another (very minor) niggle is there being no option to delete tracks from the player although again the manual states this is possible.
So where does that leave me? Everything sounds superb (which surely is the most important element) but the software can make certain albums an absolute pain to listen to.
And the case? My Plenue doesn't slide all the way in (oo-er!) and sticks out of the top a bit - not a great fit. The screen protector does the job though!
This review has come off as more negative than I'd have liked so I'll end by stressing again: it sounds fantastic and hopefully the issues I've got can be resolved by firmware updates and/or alternate tagging methods.
